We often think of the library as a place to find resources and supports for our own research and writing. But librarians can also be very helpful to GTAs in their teaching roles. Join the Centre for Teaching and Learning and Bata Library for the final GTA lunch and learn of the year. We’ll be joined by librarians Dawyne Collins, Ellen Olsen-Lynch, and Tracy Sallaway to discuss how the library can support you as both a teacher and a researcher and the features of the library that they believe are most relevant to GTAs. As always, we will conclude the event by enjoying pizza, drinks, and dessert together.

Whether intervening in conflicts between students during a heated discussion or conversing with a student who is disappointed in their mark, many GTAs find responding to unexpected or difficult situations in the classroom challenging.
The Centre for Teaching and Learning and Dr. Mara Heiber invite you to join us for a special, Reading Week Workshop designed to help GTAs create strategies for responding to challenging classroom situations. We will use theatre games and role play to anticipate and imagine responses to common classroom scenarios. Through these activities, participants will work collaboratively to develop a “cheat sheet,” an innovative tool designed by Dr. Heiber that involves identifying specific language GTAs can use to respond to unexpected and challenging classroom situations.
Morning snacks and lunch will be provided.

Many GTAs find marking student work to be challenging, both in terms of the time that it takes as well as the demands of providing students with effective feedback from which they can learn; and this challenge has only increased in the era of AI-generators.
Join the Centre for Teaching and Learning and Academic Skills to discuss how to mark student work effectively and efficiently. We will start by examining some of the implications of AI generators for academic integrity, and the capabilities of AI generators of which GTAs should be aware as they mark. We will then turn our attention to the mechanics of marking student work, including the elements of constructive feedback as well as methods to manage the marking workload.
